On the 25th of April 1915 Australian troops landed on the Gallipoli peninsula. It was the start of a campaign that lasted eight months and resulted in 8,700 Australian casualties. On this day a new passion was born, Australia's true character was revealed and the Spirit of the ANZAC was kindled. But the Spirit of ANZAC is not confined to the battlefield. It lives in the schools, on the sports fields, and all over this great country and state.

Western Australians have a strong tradition of honouring those who have served in the many conflicts our nation has been involved in. The Government has a responsibility to not let the flame of remembrance die but to pass it on to future generations so that they too may commend the heroism, comradeship and humility embodied by those who have served and fallen in the service of Australia.

Every school pupil knows something of the ANZAC story, but to further enrich this knowledge and ensure its longevity the Government of Western Australia will select a group of students each year to travel to ANZAC sites to attend Dawn Service.
